Head coach Ralph Friedgen and the Terrapins dropped another game after a 17-13 loss to Duke during an ACC football game in Durham, NC on Saturday, October 24, 2009. Alan P. Santos/DC Sports Box file photo DURHAM, N.C. - After playing their previous game at home in such miserable conditions, the University of Maryland Terrapins football team must have felt an extra spring in their step as they played in the rain against the Duke University Blue Devils Saturday afternoon. Too bad improved conditions from last weeks windy, rainy and muddy bog of a game were not enough for the Terrapins to get a victory at Wallace Wade Stadium against the Blue Devils as they fell 13-17.
Duke who came into Saturday afternoon's game averaging 31.8 points per game was held to only 17 points by the Terp defense, but in a losing effort. Maryland's defense, while creating three turnovers, did however allow Duke to score on three separate drives of 69, 73 and 80-yards. Maryland's offense was only able to muster 13 points even though they seemed to move the ball effectively, in spurts, against Duke throughout the game. On the first scoring drive of the first half by the Terps, the offense was able to drive 75 yards but stalled at Dukes seven-yard-line and settled for a Nick Ferrara field goal. On Maryland's second score they needed back-to-back forced turnovers by the Maryland defense. One forced fumble by Alex Wujciak and recovery by Jamari McCollough and then an interception on Duke's ensuing drive (after the Terps went three-and-out) by Cameron Chism set the Terps up in prime scoring position. Unfortunately, the Terps offense was only able to gain eight yards before having to settle for another Ferrara field goal. After that score the Maryland offense began to sputter putting consecutive drives of 3 plays and 1 yard gained and 6 plays and 16 yards gained together before scoring their only touchdown of the game after a 59-yard drive ended on a 67-yard pass from quarter back Chris Turner to running back Davin Meggett. The game ended where Maryland's problems usually start, turnovers. With less than five minutes remaining in the game, Turner was picked off by Duke's Vincent Rey. Maryland's defense was able to hold Duke to minus yards on the possession but time was more of a key factor. On Duke's ensuing punt with just under 2 minutes remaining, Maryland's Tony Logan fumbled the kick, Duke's Brandon King recovered and the Blue Devils were able to run out the clock. The Terps fall to 1-3 in conference play and 2-6 overall. They will be right back in North Carolina for their next game on November 7, to face North Carolina State.
