TALLAHASEE, F.L. - The Florida State Seminoles became bowl eligible for the 28th straight year Saturday afternoon, but unfortunately, at Maryland’s expense.
Freshman Lonnie Pryor crushed Maryland fans with one long 50-yard run in the second quarter that gave Florida State a 14-3 lead, and one big run with 32 seconds left in the game that eventually gave Florida State the victory.
The last touchdown was set up by a punt return by freshman Greg Reid who was able gain 48 yards, placing the ball in Maryland territory at the 44.
“It seemed to rejuvenate the whole team,” Florida State Head Coach Bobby Bowden said. “That’s what his punt return did.”
With a little under two minutes left in the game, Florida State was able to run their two-minute-offense with efficiency down to the Maryland three-yard-line. Lining up in the backfield, Pryor was soon in the endzone for the go ahead score, and eventually, the game winner.
This game was definitely a heart breaker for Maryland as they fought from being down 14-3 early in the game to come back and grab the lead 26-22, with only 4:29 remaining in the fourth quarter on a Davin Meggett 9-yard touchdown run, his second of the game.
His first was assisted on an Alex Wujciak interception and return of 82 yards that set the ball at the goal line. Maryland then punched it in, to only be down 14-13 at halftime.
Maryland freshman Cameron Chism seemed to seal the game away when he intercepted Florida State’s freshman, EJ Manuel (Maryland’s third of the game), who was making his first start, at the 2:57 mark. But Maryland’s offense couldn’t sustain a drive to run out the clock and had to punt to Reid who set up the winning score.
Maryland played their most efficient offensive game of the season Saturday but it still was not enough.
Freshman quarterback Jamarr Robinson was able to complete 20 of 27 passes for 214 yards, as well as, a touchdown pass that gave Maryland their first lead of the game 19-13. More importantly, Robinson threw zero interceptions, a problem Maryland has battled with all season.
The Terrapins have fallen to 2-9 (1-6) for the season and now look to end on a positive note at home against Boston College, who is 7-4, 4-3 in conference play.
