BETHESDA, MD - Behind the white ropes on the practice green, appeared many professional golfers all who will compete for the same title. Meanwhile, behind the Quicken Loans set up in the media center, appeared Tiger Woods, looking like the strong champion everyone knows him to be. Tiger was last seen in a press conference at the Congressional Country Club in May, when he was unsure whether he would be playing in the Quicken Loans National tournament.

On Friday, June 20, ESPN’s breaking news announced to all sports fans that Tiger Woods had confirmed his participation in the Quicken Loans tournament at the Congressional which is being held June 23-29. This will be Tiger’s first competition since his back surgery, while he has been religiously rehabbing it for top performance and a strong recovery.

To many golf fans this is very exciting news. However, to other golfers, this probably isn’t the best thing to hear. Coming off of an injury while being so restricted from daily routine and being constrained of so much due to doctor’s orders, can only fuel Tiger that much more. It is of curiosity to all the spectators and players whether Woods will come back just as strong, or stronger. There is no question of weakness in the game. One thing Tiger definitely has not lost is his confidence. He knows he faces every tournament with a personal expectation that he has to win. Impressively enough, he informs the audience, “expectations don't change, that's the ultimate goal.”

Woods spoke to the press on June 24, 2014, explaining his road to recovery, challenges he faced throughout the journey, modified workout plans and most of all how he has mentally trained himself to perform at his peak.

An obvious assumption amongst all fans as to what Tiger’s biggest challenge this week is the same- if he will still have the same strength and accuracy in his swing and shot. After a slight chuckle, Woods expressed that his biggest challenge would be the difference in the grass from home, versus the Bethesda green. He feels confident in his putting, but as far as chipping goes he says, “I have got to get used to chipping out of this type of grass.” For all he has been through- this is quite a striking component of his worries amongst everything else possible.

Tiger has a remarkable outlook on what lies ahead and not dwelling on his past. He has not let his injury take over his mindset, and he has grown as a person and athlete every step of the way during his recovery process. He says, “Listening to my body, is one thing that I have learned”. He has been smart with gaging when and when not his body can handle the extra swings. With his previous knee injuries, playing through the pain was not a problem. However, with this back injury he was not able to function. Knowing when to attempt to practice, when to do physical therapy, what to eat, was all in the athlete’s hands.

It is safe to say Tiger is back to his normal self, and is ready to compete amongst the other well-prepared golfers without any hesitations in his mind. Just like every other golfer out there, every man for himself is trying to be the champion. For Tiger, a back injury is no reason not to hold the title behind his name.
