WASHINGTON, D.C. - The humid night got underway early as much of the 28,000 fans arrived early in anticipation of an exciting game between the United States soccer team and their South American counterparts Peru.

Heading into the encounter, both teams were using the game as a warm up with the USA getting ready to take on Mexico next month for a chance to play in the 2017 Confederations Cup. There was added pressure on U.S. coach Jurgen Klinsmann who was determined to make a statement after the red, white, and blue crashed out of the gold cup, losing to Jamaica in the semifinal.

The game got underway with a very lively enthused crowd watching and chanting while the U.S. and Peru were playing at a blisteringly fast pace.  Peru got things started in the scoring department when forward Daniel Chavez scored with a deflected shot in the first half. The goal inspired brilliant play from the Peruvians who took advantage of a shell-shocked team USA who struggled to get anything going without Jermaine Jones more involved. Jermaine Jones was able to get his way back into the game when he dribbled through midfield in the 39th minute and blasted a shot from 25 yards out that forced Peruvian goalie Diego Penny to fully stretch to tip the shot over the goal post.

It was in the second half that team USA decided to pressure the ball more and it was that strategy that turned the team’s fortunes around when Jozy Altidore was taken down in the box causing the referee to call for a penalty kick. Stepping up to the spot in the 59th minute, Jozy made no mistake to convert the goal to give the U.S. a confidence boost heading into the final minutes of the game. Time and time again the Peruvians threatened the U.S. goalkeeper Brad Guzan, with the goalie being forced to make a double save in the second half to keep the game tied up

The U.S. soaked up much of the pressure until they began playing of a consistent counter attack eventually putting Peru on the defensive. Then, roughly 8 minutes after he had scored his first goal, Jozy Altidore was on the scoreboard again when DeAndre Yedlin’s cross went wide and fell to Gyasi Zardes who sent the ball across the goal to an unmarked Altidore who tapped the ball in to give team USA the lead and send the USA fans into a frenzy.

Throughout the rest of the half Peru would threaten constantly but the U.S. held firm and got the win. Next up team USA will play Brazil in Foxborough, Massachusetts.
