COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Maryland men's baseball team dropped the series to Boston College this weekend at Shipley Field, 1-2.

In the first game of the series, Boston College took an early 4 - 0 lead in the first inning off Maryland starting pitcher Matt Fullerton. After allowing an additional single at the top of the second, Fullerton was pulled from the mound and relieved by senior Brett Jones. Jones allowed an additional two runs in 5 1/3 innings. The Terps' batting struggled against Boston College starting pitcher JB MacDonald, who struck out seven and allowed only two runs on eight hits. Maryland notched its first run in the bottom of the third off a sacrifice fly by senior Will Greenberg. The only other run came in the bottom of the eighth off a home run by third baseman Mike Murphy. The Terps fell 6-2 to the Eagles and suffered their first home loss of the season.

In game two of the series the Eagles again struck first on the scoreboard, but their lead didn't last long. Maryland senior Gerry Spessard provided the Terps with a 2-1 lead off a two-run single in the bottom half of the second inning. Boston College's Tony Sanchez tied the game 2-2 with a solo home run off Maryland junior Scott Swinson and shortly after Brad Zapenas recaptured the Eagles lead with a bunt groundout, 3-2. Maryland's Mike Murphy tied the game again in the bottom of the fifth on a two-out RBI double, 3-3. A.J. Casario scored on the play, but David Poultier was thrown out at home. Tied at the top of the ninth inning the Eagles threatened to score as Mickey Wiswall stepped up to bat with runners on second and third. A pitching change was made and junior Ian Schwalenberg stepped onto the mound to replace junior Dan Gentzler.  Wiswall grounded out to first base for the final out and the Terps faced the bottom of the ninth still tied.

The final inning played out just as the great baseball tales always do. A.J. Casario started out the inning with a single to the right side.  David Poutier followed suit with a single to right center that allowed Casario to move to second. Boston College relieved pitcher Chris Kowalski with Mike Belfiore and Maryland returned the favor by replacing designated hitter Jensen Pupa with freshman Taylor Buran. Buran singled through the right side and Casario came running home. The Terps claimed a 4-3 victory against Boston College and improved their overall record to 10-10 and 3-5 in the ACC.

Boston College took game three of the series on Sunday afternoon. The Eagles struck first on the scoreboard for the third time in the three-game series off a two-out RBI single from third baseman Mickey Wiswall. Maryland senior Dan Benick helped the Terps take the lead in the second inning on a two-run double hit to center-field (2-1), but the Terps failed to score throughout the rest of the game. Meanwhile the Eagles struck in the third, sixth and seventh innings, ending the day victorious at  5-2. Following this loss Maryland's record now falls to 10-11 and 3-6 in the ACC.

Maryland’s next game is Tuesday March 24th at George Mason. The Terps will return to Shipley Field on Wednesday, March 25th to take on UMBC.
